Specific Skills Must have working knowledge of the following skills gained through coursework or experience Independently designing and optimizing organic reactions, and evaluating and interpreting data; Performing total synthesis of natural products that possess significant biological activities; utilizing knowledge of multistep synthesis of complex organic molecules and methodology development, and understanding in reaction mechanisms and retrosynthetic analysis; utilizing modern characterization techniques including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance analysis, IR spectroscopy, HPLC High Performance Liquid Chromatography, GC Gas Chromatography, Mass spectrometry, and Optical rotations; utilizing isolation and purification techniques, such as Column Chromatography, Recrystallization, Prep TLC, Preparative Thin Layer Chromatography, and Preparative HPLC; Handling chemicals under rigorously inert atmosphere e.g. glovebox to carry experiments with air and moisture sensitive transformations; Identifying and incorporating new technologies such as microwave chemistry and highpressure hydrogenation, photoredox; Preparing and determining natural products with conformational chirality; Preparing, isolating and identifying deuterated compounds; Performing cross coupling reactions, such as Ullmann coupling and Suzuki coupling; Providing guidance to laboratory personnel; Utilizing office and chemistry related software such as SciFinder, Reaxys, ChemDraw, TopSpin, Microsoft Office, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Adobe; and Understanding EHS Environmental Health and Safety expectations for chemical laboratories. Also, must have published at least one first author paper in a prestigious scientific journal.
